A scheduled ancient monument
rich in domestic nostalgia

Before the discovery of natural gas in the North Sea, Britain’s gas was made from coal. Fakenham’s gas museum combines industrial archaeology with social and cultural history. It charts the first steps to light up homes and cities at night and to provide heating and domestic appliances. It also pays homage to an industry that between 1800 and 1970 employed over a million people.  

Your visit will take in the only complete town gas works in England and Wales - a scheduled ancient monument in itself.  Displays are packed with cookers, lighting, fires and boilers that will bring back memories even for younger visitors. Additionally the museum houses exhibitions relating to Fakenham itself, its printing industry, sporting past and wartime stories.

Other good things to do near by
Thursday is market day in Fakenham and, as well as one of the best markets in the county, there’s the renowned flea market and auction at James Beck Auctions.  Every fourth Saturday there’s a farmers’ market and the church often holds a craft market then too.

The town itself is full of interest and you can pick up a heritage trail itinerary at the museum.  Nearby attractions include Pensthorpe nature reserve and gardens, the Hawk and Owl Trust at Sculthorpe Moor and of course, Fakenham Race Course.

Travel and parking
From the centre of Fakenham, at the junction of Market Place and Norwich Street, head south down Bridge Street, over the bridge and into Hempton Road. The museum is on your left. Arriving from Swaffham and Dereham the museum is on your right before you get to the town centre. 

Pay and display car park on Bridge Street. Small free car park east of the museum down the gravel road past Wensum engineering. One disabled parking space on site. Call museum to reserve.

Public transport
The nearest bus stop is in Oak Street. Norfolk Green offers services from Norwich, Hunstanton, Kings Lynn, Cromer, Holt and Wells. Sanders Coaches also offer a selection of services.
