A glorious mansion built by
Britain’s first prime minister

In 1727 Norfolk man Sir Robert Walpole became Britain’s first Prime Minister.  He built and furnished Houghton Hall to reflect his position at the heart of the British state. The Hall's opulently-furnished rooms are rich with beautiful paintings, statues and tapestries collected from across Europe – truly a feast for the eyes.

In addition to the marvellous Palladian house you can visit St Michael’s Church and the handsome stable block which houses the restaurant and gift shop. There’s also a museum with one of the largest collections of model soldiers in the world and recreations of entire battle scenes including the Battle of Waterloo.

  • Extensive gardens include the award-winning, five-acre walled garden, a parterre with over 150 varieties of English rose and a spectacular double-sided herbaceous border
  • Extensive parklands with over 1000 white fallow deer
  • Music events

Recommended length of visit: 3 to 4 hours
