Cherishing a golden age of
engineering and agriculture

This museum, housed in Burrells original paint shop, tells the story of the Charles Burrell Works – a Thetford business that once employed 350 people and supplied beautiful and reliable steam-powered engines throughout the world.  

Burrells built traction engines, agricultural machinery, steam trucks wagons and tram engines, thriving until the internal combustion engine took over from steam power.

Displays include fine engines and agricultural machinery alongside recreations of parts of the original works such as the foundry and the machine shop.

The museum is round the corner from the Ancient House Museum and ten minutes walk from the Dad’s Army Museum.

Thetford is a picturesque and historic town with many fascinating features including an impressive Norman castle, a ruined 12th century priory and delightful riverside walks.

Pick up an itinerary for one of the town’s excellent trails from the Tourist Information Centre in the Leaping Hare on King Street.

Kings House Gardens on King Street and the Forgotten Garden on Ford Street are perfect for picnics and the town boasts several Portuguese cafés offering some of the best coffee and cakes in Norfolk.

Fourty minutes drive from Norwich and Cambridge. Free parking nearby on White Hart Street. Ten minutes walk from the train and bus stations.
