A towering landmark of a windmill
Windmills used to be a vitally important part of rural village life and the language of windmills is still with us today. Millstones ground to a halt when the wind dropped and the mill sails could no longer turn them - we still ‘grind to a halt’ today!
This beautifully restored windmill gives you a taste of many aspects of traditional village life, from the windmill itself to the working bakery, cottage gardens and the milking parlour when you can see sheep being milked every day at 2pm.
The windmill is in working order and on windy days, visitors can see the sails and the milling machinery turning. During the summer months you can also visit Wild Thyme Cottage, which depicts a farm labourer’s cottage of around 1900.

Other good things to do near by Hire a bike from Bircham Windmill and explore the lovely quiet lanes nearby. Head for Norfolk’s ‘sunset coast’ or for the wild marsh, heath and boglands of Dersingham Bog National Nature Reserve.
The Sandringham Estate and Norfolk Lavender are both near by – as is Snettisham Park Farm, which offers an archaeological trail around its grounds as well as many family attractions.
